What You Need to Know About Ingrown Toenails

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the nail curves and grows into the surrounding
skin—most often along the sides of the nail. This can lead to irritation, resulting in pain, redness, swelling, and a warm sensation in the affected toe. If the nail breaks the skin, bacteria can enter and lead to an infection. Signs of infection may include drainage, increased tenderness, and an unpleasant odor. Even in cases without noticeable discomfort or swelling, a toenail that presses into the skin can still pose a risk for future infection if left untreated.
